Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

My name is Corrine Shmyruk and I am thrilled to to be a on a learning journey with you and your child(ren).   The 2023-2024 school year will be our eighth year as a school community and we are excited to begin another year of learning and discovery!

At Parkside Montessori we have child-directed, individualized, hands-on learning within a Montessori prepared environment, rooted in the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori.  The Montessori philosophy of education supports the intellectual and social development of the child through a process of exploration of natural curiosities and fostering of an intrinsic love of learning.  Our program emphasizes Social Emotional Learning and the development of self-regulation skills.  We support and encourage growth in pursuit of excellence in meeting the priorities identified in the Grande Prairie Public School Division's 3-Year Education Plan including Teaching and Learning, Leadership and Inclusion.  I am confident that Parkside Montessori, being the only of its kind in Grande Prairie, sets a foundation that allows students to truly embrace the Montessori philosophy.

The Montessori program is based on the notion that family, working with the school, will provide the optimal success for each child. Parental involvement in the school life ensures the development of this partnership.  You will receive regular updates from your child’s teacher about his/her learning and progress. You will also be informed of themes and specific whole class learning occurring in your child’s classroom. In alignment with our school Division reporting terms, you will receive a progress report three times per year. It is important to us that parents feel informed about their child’s learning. If at any point, you wish to know additional information or explore curiosities you have about your child’s learning, you are encouraged to connect with your child’s teacher

As a school leader, I passionately believe in the importance of education, the honor of being a leader, and the gift of having the opportunity to prepare students for success in the future.  We look forward to meeting your children and to partnering with you on this journey.

At Parkside Montessori we...

..envision a school community where:

  • Children are the center of our practice and are encouraged to be life-long, independent learners
  • Children develop self-confidence and are proud of who they are.
  • Children are inspired and encouraged to follow a natural curiosity for learning.
  • Respectful interactions, empathy, understanding, kindness and acceptance are commonly practiced by all community members.
  • A global perspective is encouraged and fostered.
  • Risk-taking in learning is encouraged and opportunities are presented to pursue excellence for each individual at his/her own level.
  • Children develop self-motivation and confidently persevere through challenges.
  • Collaboration between students, teachers, parents, and the community is common in our day-to-day interactions.

Parkside Montessori is a fully dedicated Montessori public school that offers a comprehensive program to all students in alignment with both the Alberta Education Program of Studies and individualized Montessori instruction.  Our teachers draw from a common source: the child and our best practices for teaching and learning.

Unique aspects to our Montessori environment include: a multi-age span in each classroom, individually prepared lessons, 2-3 hours of uninterrupted work periods, hands on material with built in controls of error, Practical Life activities designed to prepare students with life skills, Cosmic Education which gives the child a foundational sense of perspective on the interconnectedness of the universe, and Sensorial Exercises which are designed to enhance the child's five senses.
